Quick Answer

Lucario does not spawn in the wild in Cobblemon. The only way to get one is to catch Riolu in mountain biomes and evolve it. To trigger the evolution you need two things at once: friendship at 160 or higher, and a level-up that happens during the daytime. Miss either condition and it will not go through.

This page covers both halves of that journey — where to find Riolu, and how to get from there to Lucario as fast as possible.

No Wild Spawn Evolve from Riolu ☀️ Daytime Level-Up Required Friendship 160+
⚠️
The most common mistake Maxing Riolu's friendship and then trying to evolve it at night. The evolution just does not trigger — no error, no feedback, it just does not happen. You need both conditions together: high friendship and a daytime level-up.

Step 1 — Find and Catch Riolu

Before you can worry about friendship, you need Riolu in your party. It is a rare spawn in mountain terrain — not brutally rare, but not a five-minute find either. The good news is there is no time-of-day restriction on catching Riolu itself. You can hunt it any time.

For the full Riolu hunting guide including biome maps and farming routes, see the Where to Find Riolu page. The short version:

Primary biomes Mountains

Meadow, Stony Peaks, and Jagged Peaks are the main hunting grounds. Open ridgeline routes work better than cramped terrain.

Rarity Rare

Riolu is not a common spawn. Budget ten to twenty minutes of focused mountain sweeping. It will show up — just not instantly.

Time restriction None

You can hunt Riolu any time of day. The daytime requirement only applies to the evolution trigger, not to finding it in the wild.

Step 2 — Evolve Riolu into Lucario

This is where most players hit a wall. Riolu's evolution is friendship-based with a time-of-day condition layered on top — and if you have never dealt with a friendship evolution before, the lack of feedback can make it feel broken when it is actually working fine.

Here is the complete process, in order:

1
Give Riolu the Soothe Bell

This held item roughly doubles the friendship points Riolu gains from all passive sources. It is the single biggest time-saver in the whole process — get this on Riolu immediately after catching it.

Strongly recommended
2
Keep Riolu in your active party

Friendship builds through walking, battling, and levelling up. A Riolu sitting in a PC box gains nothing. Keep it in your team of six and it will passively accumulate friendship during normal play.

Required
3
Use friendship-boosting berries

Kelpsy, Pomeg, Qualot, Hondew, Grepa, and Tamato berries all raise friendship when used on Riolu. They lower a base stat slightly in exchange, but on a freshly caught Riolu with no EV investment this is a worthwhile trade for the speed gain.

Optional but fast
4
Never let Riolu faint

Fainting deals a significant friendship penalty. During the friendship grind, keep Riolu out of fights it cannot win, or switch it in briefly for XP and then swap it out before it is in danger.

Important
5
Level up Riolu during the daytime

Once friendship is at 160 or above, trigger the next level-up while it is daytime in-game. This is the actual evolution trigger. If you accidentally level it at night, nothing bad happens — just wait until day and gain another level.

Required — daytime only

Friendship Guide — Hitting 160 Fast

Friendship in Cobblemon goes from 0 to 255. Riolu starts at 70 when caught in the wild. You need to reach 160 before the evolution triggers — that is a gap of 90 friendship points minimum from a fresh catch.

Soothe Bell (held item) Roughly doubles passive friendship gain from walking and battling. Equip this immediately after catching Riolu — it is the most impactful single action you can take.
Friendship berries Kelpsy, Pomeg, and Qualot berries each give +10 friendship. Use a handful on a fresh Riolu and you will close the gap to 160 noticeably faster.
Keep it in the active party Each step you take builds friendship passively. A Riolu in a box gains nothing. Keep it in your party of six and let normal play do the work.
Win battles with it Each battle Riolu survives and contributes to also adds friendship. You do not need to let it take all the hits — just having it participate and not faint is enough.

How to check Riolu's friendship level In Cobblemon, you can use the /checkfriendship <player> <slot> command if your server has it enabled, or look for the Friendship Checker NPC in-game. On some modpacks the Pokémon summary screen also shows a friendship indicator.

Why Lucario Is Worth the Effort

Lucario is genuinely one of the best Pokémon you can have on a Cobblemon team. The friendship grind feels significant when you are in it, but the payoff is a versatile, high-tier attacker that stays relevant throughout the game.

That stat jump is real. Lucario's 110 Attack and 115 Special Attack give it genuine two-way offensive threat — it can run physical sets with Close Combat and Bullet Punch, or special sets built around Aura Sphere and Flash Cannon. That flexibility makes it useful in almost any team composition.

Fighting / Steel typing covers a huge amountSteel neutralises Poison and resists Rock, Normal, and Flying. Fighting hits Normal, Ice, Rock, Dark, and Steel hard. Together this gives Lucario excellent offensive and defensive utility.
Physical and special sets both workUnlike most attackers that clearly favour one stat, Lucario's 110/115 split means you can build either direction depending on what your team needs. Aura Sphere on the special side, Close Combat on the physical side.
Bullet Punch gives priority coverageThis Steel-type priority move patches one of Lucario's few weaknesses — being outsped by faster threats. Bullet Punch lets Lucario pick off weakened faster Pokémon that it normally could not finish.
Relevant in both casual and competitive playLucario is strong enough to carry casual playthroughs and tier-relevant enough to hold its own in server competitive. The friendship grind is the main barrier — once you have it, it earns its team slot.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Lucario spawn in the wild in Cobblemon?

No. Lucario does not have a wild spawn in Cobblemon. The only way to obtain one is to catch Riolu in mountain biomes and evolve it by raising friendship to 160 or higher, then triggering a level-up during the daytime.

Where does Lucario spawn in Cobblemon?

It does not spawn anywhere. If you are searching the wild for a Lucario, you will not find one. Catch Riolu in mountain biomes — Meadow, Stony Peaks, and Jagged Peaks — and evolve it instead. Check the Riolu spawn guide for detailed biome and farming tips.

How do you evolve Riolu into Lucario in Cobblemon?

Raise Riolu's friendship to 160 or above, then trigger a level-up during the daytime. Both conditions are required simultaneously. The Soothe Bell held item and friendship berries (Kelpsy, Pomeg, Qualot) speed the friendship grind up significantly.

What level does Riolu evolve in Cobblemon?

Riolu does not evolve at a specific level. Friendship drives the evolution, not the level number. Once friendship is at 160 or higher, the very next level-up during daytime triggers the evolution — whether that is level 10 or level 40.

Why won't Riolu evolve even though my friendship is high?

Almost always because the level-up happened at night. This is the most common sticking point. Riolu's evolution requires the triggering level-up to happen during the daytime specifically. Wait until day in-game and earn another level — it will go through.

Is Lucario good in Cobblemon?

Yes — it is one of the strongest non-legendary options available. 110 Attack, 115 Special Attack, and 90 Speed make it a genuine offensive threat, and the Fighting/Steel typing gives it excellent coverage and resistances. Worth every step of the friendship grind.
