Understanding Team Roles

A well-built competitive team covers six distinct roles. You don't need exactly one of each, but understanding what each role does helps you identify the gaps in your team and patch them before a match.

Sweeper
High offensive stats, high speed. Goal is to get in safely and KO multiple Pokémon before going down.
Examples: Garchomp, Lucario, Gengar, Alakazam
🛡️
Wall / Tank
High defensive stats. Absorbs hits, spreads status, and stalls out opposing sweepers.
Examples: Blissey, Skarmory, Ferrothorn, Toxapex
🔄
Pivot / Support
Creates opportunities for teammates. Uses moves like U-turn, Volt Switch, or sets up entry hazards.
Examples: Rotom, Scizor, Clefable, Corviknight
🪨
Hazard Setter
Lays Stealth Rock, Spikes or Toxic Spikes. Forces damage on switches and wears down opposing teams.
Examples: Garchomp, Ferrothorn, Glimmora, Hippowdon
🧹
Hazard Remover
Clears entry hazards with Rapid Spin or Defog. Essential if your team is hazard-weak.
Examples: Excadrill, Corviknight, Tentacruel, Starmie
🎭
Revenge Killer
Fast or has priority. Comes in to finish off weakened threats that other Pokémon couldn't KO.
Examples: Weavile, Talonflame, Rillaboom, Breloom

Type Synergy — How to Cover Your Weaknesses

Type synergy means each Pokémon on your team covers the weaknesses of the others. A classic example: Steel types are weak to Fire and Fighting, so pairing them with a Water type (resists Fire) and a Psychic type (resists Fighting) creates a defensive core.

🧩
The FWG Core Fire / Water / Grass is the most famous type synergy trio. Fire beats Grass, Water beats Fire, Grass beats Water — each covers the other's weakness. Use it as a backbone and build around it.

Common Defensive Cores

  • Steel + Fairy + Fire — Steel resists Fairy, Fairy checks Dragon/Dark, Fire covers Steel's Fighting/Ground weakness
  • Water + Ground + Grass — Water checks Fire/Rock, Ground handles Electric/Poison, Grass handles Water/Ground
  • Ghost + Dark + Fairy — Psychic immunity, Fighting immunity, Dragon immunity
  • Dragon + Steel + Fairy — Dragon covers most types offensively, Steel handles Fairy weakness, Fairy stops Dragon on Dragon
