What is a shiny Pokémon?
Shinies are rare Pokémon with an alternate colour scheme — a golden Magikarp, a black Charizard, a blue Oddish. They have the same stats as regular Pokémon, they're purely cosmetic, and they're one of the most satisfying things to find in Cobblemon. The base encounter rate is roughly 1 in 4,096.

Cobblemon uses the standard Pokémon shiny rate system. The base rate is 1 in 4,096 for any wild encounter — the same as modern mainline games. Several mechanics can improve these odds significantly.

Every Shiny Hunting Method Explained
There are four main ways to improve your shiny odds in Cobblemon. Stack as many as possible for the best results.

Poké Snacks
Best for wild
Added in v1.7, Poké Snacks are craftable at the Campfire Pot using type-specific ingredients. Place them in the world to attract Pokémon of the matching type and increase their shiny rate. A fire-type snack attracts fire types and boosts their shiny rate. The single best method for wild shiny hunting — place snacks, find a good spot and wait.

Catch Combos
Stack with snacks
Catch the same species of Pokémon repeatedly without catching a different species or fleeing. Your combo builds up and the shiny rate for that species increases as the combo grows. Combos of 25, 50 and 100+ give the biggest boosts. Breaking your combo resets the boost — only catch the target species.

Masuda Method
Best for specific targets
Breed two Pokémon from different in-game language settings — for example a Japanese Ditto with an English Pokémon. The resulting eggs have a significantly higher shiny rate. Best method if you have a specific Pokémon in mind and want to shiny hunt and breed for IVs simultaneously. Requires understanding the breeding system first.

Shiny Charm
Passive boost
An item obtained by completing your Pokédex — registering all available Pokémon as caught. Once you have it, it passively boosts shiny rates on all encounters. A long-term goal rather than an immediate method, but it stacks with everything else and persists permanently once obtained.

Best Shiny Pokémon to Hunt First
Not all shinies are created equal. Some have dramatic colour changes that make them instantly recognisable — others barely look different. Here are the most sought-after shinies and why they're worth hunting.
Magikarp
The iconic golden Magikarp — one of the most recognisable shinies in the franchise. Common enough to actually find, distinctive enough to be worth showing off. Great first shiny target.
Easy hunt
Charizard
Black shiny Charizard is one of the most iconic shinies in Pokémon. Rare and hard to obtain since Charmander itself is rare — but the payoff is massive. A shiny Charizard in your party turns heads on any server.
Hard hunt
Umbreon
Shiny Umbreon has brilliant blue rings instead of yellow — a clean, striking look that's completely different from the original. Hunt shiny Eevee in forests and evolve at night for this one.
Medium hunt
Gyarados
Red shiny Gyarados — legendary status in the Pokémon franchise since Gold and Silver. Evolve a shiny Magikarp or hunt it directly in deep ocean biomes. The red colour is dramatic and immediately recognisable.

Practical Tips for Efficient Hunting

Stack multiple Poké Snacks
Place several snacks of the same type in one area. Each snack stacks the attraction and shiny boost. A pile of fire-type snacks in a nether biome is a fast way to hunt fire-type shinies.

Build your combo carefully
Only catch the exact species you're hunting. Don't accidentally catch something else or your combo resets. Keep your party strong enough to one-shot everything except your target species.

Hunt at the right time of day
Many Pokémon are time-locked. Ghost types and dark types peak at night. If a shiny you want only spawns at night, don't waste snacks during the day — set up your spot at dusk.

Mark your hunting spots
Once you find a biome with good spawns of your target, mark it with a waypoint or build a small marker. Coming back to a proven spot with snacks already placed is far more efficient than wandering.

Shiny fishing works
Fishing in Cobblemon can produce shiny water-type Pokémon. Poké Snacks designed for water types boost this rate. Magikarp, Horsea and Goldeen are all fishable — and all have great shinies.

If you're breeding for competitive IVs anyway, use a foreign Ditto for Masuda Method. You get the shiny boost for free while building your competitive team. Two goals, one grind.

How to tell if a Pokémon is shiny
Shiny Pokémon have a distinctive sparkle animation when they spawn in the world — small stars appear around them briefly. If you miss the sparkle, the different colour is your clue. Always check the colour of Pokémon near you before running past them.
