Updated April 2026

Before You Start

Catching legendary Pokémon in Cobblemon is nothing like catching a regular wild spawn — most of them require specific items, specific biomes, and in many cases the Legendary Encounters datapack installed on your world or server. Without it, only a small handful of legendaries are available.

⚠️
You need the Legendary Encounters datapack Most legendary Pokémon in Cobblemon — including Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres, Rayquaza, and Xerneas — are only available through the Legendary Encounters datapack. Check with your server admin or install it yourself before hunting. Mew and Mewtwo are available in the base mod.

Before heading out, make sure you're properly prepared — legendary Pokémon spawn at level 55–100 and can wipe your team easily if you're not ready.

⚔️
Strong Team
Train your Pokémon to at least level 50+. Legendary birds spawn at level 55. Rayquaza and Mewtwo spawn at level 70–100.
🎯
Ultra Balls
Craft as many Ultra Balls as you can. Master Balls are ideal but extremely rare. A Pokémon with False Swipe helps too.
🧪
Healing Items
Bring Potions, Max Potions, and Revives. Legendary fights are long — you'll need to keep your Pokémon alive to weaken them.
💡
One shot per legendary In the base Legendary Encounters datapack, each legendary can only be summoned once per world. If you accidentally faint it without catching it, it's gone. Save before summoning, or check your server's rules on respawning legendaries.

The Legendary Birds

The three Kanto legendary birds — Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres — are summoned by finding a Beacon (or building your own with 9 iron blocks) and right-clicking it while holding the required stones. Each bird has its own biome requirement.

Mewtwo & Mew

Unlike the legendary birds, Mewtwo and Mew have different requirements. Importantly, Mew is available in the base Cobblemon mod without any datapack — it just spawns extremely rarely in certain biomes.

  • 4
Mewtwo spawns at level 70. It's one of the strongest — bring your best team.

Datapack needed?
No — base mod only
  • 1
No summon needed — Mew spawns naturally but at an ultra-rare rate.
  • 2
Your best bet is the Faraway Ruin structure — a special location that increases Mew's spawn rate significantly.
  • 3
Visit at noon in-game time in a Forest, Jungle or Dark Forest biome.
  • 4
Be patient — Mew can still be extremely elusive even with ideal conditions.
Shiny Mew — Mew has the standard 1/4096 shiny chance, but the Legendary Encounters datapack's dungeon structures give a boosted 1/4097 chance for shinies on legendary encounters. Worth the hunt!

Rayquaza

Rayquaza is arguably the most important legendary to catch — defeating or catching it unlocks access to Paradox Pokémon and the Shady Villager NPC, opening up late-game content.

Other Legendaries

Several more legendaries are available via the Legendary Encounters datapack, each with their own unique requirements.

Victini

Victini spawns at rare rates in the Warped Forest biome in the Nether via the Legendary Encounters datapack.

Meloetta

#648 · Normal / Psychic · Level 50–55
MythicalDatapack

Meloetta spawns at rare rates in the Warped Forest biome (Nether) via the Legendary Encounters datapack.

Legendary Dungeons

The Legendary Encounters datapack also adds underground Legendary Dungeons — one-time-use structures buried throughout the world. Each dungeon lets you summon a random legendary you've previously encountered.

⚠️
One-time use only Each dungeon can only be used once. Once a legendary is summoned inside, the dungeon becomes permanently inactive. These give a 1/4097 chance of spawning a shiny legendary — rare but possible.
  • 1
Explore underground (below Y=40) to find these ancient temple structures.
  • 2
Place a Totem of Undying in the dropper at the dungeon entrance before entering.
  • 3
A random legendary you've previously faced will spawn inside. Prepare accordingly.

Tips for Catching Legendaries

🎣
Use False Swipe
Pokémon with False Swipe leave the target at exactly 1 HP without knocking it out. Paras, Scyther, and Sandshrew can learn it.
😴
Status Conditions
Paralysis and Sleep dramatically improve catch rates. Thunder Wave and Spore/Sleep Powder are invaluable for legendary hunting.
💾
Save First
On singleplayer, save your world before summoning any legendary. If you accidentally knock it out, you can quit without saving and retry.
