Before You Start
Catching legendary Pokémon in Cobblemon is nothing like catching a regular wild spawn — most of them require specific items, specific biomes, and in many cases the Legendary Encounters datapack installed on your world or server. Without it, only a small handful of legendaries are available.
Before heading out, make sure you're properly prepared — legendary Pokémon spawn at level 55–100 and can wipe your team easily if you're not ready.
The Legendary Birds
The three Kanto legendary birds — Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres — are summoned by finding a Beacon (or building your own with 9 iron blocks) and right-clicking it while holding the required stones. Each bird has its own biome requirement.
- 1Travel to a Snowy Plains or Ice Spikes biome.
- 2Locate a natural Beacon or build one yourself (9 iron blocks + Beacon block).
- 3Hold 4× Ice Stone in your hand and right-click the Beacon.
- 4Articuno will spawn. Weaken it before throwing Balls — False Swipe is your best friend here.
- 1Zapdos is the most flexible — it can be summoned in any biome.
- 2Find or build a Beacon, then right-click it holding 4× Thunder Stone.
- 3Zapdos spawns at level 55. Use Rock or Ice type moves to deal neutral/super effective damage safely.
- 1Head to the Nether and find a Basalt Delta biome, or find Badlands in the Overworld.
- 2Right-click a Beacon holding 4× Fire Stone during clear weather.
- 3Use Water or Rock moves to weaken it — avoid using Fire types entirely.
Mewtwo & Mew
Unlike the legendary birds, Mewtwo and Mew have different requirements. Importantly, Mew is available in the base Cobblemon mod without any datapack — it just spawns extremely rarely in certain biomes.
- 1Defeat the Wither to obtain a Nether Star. Make sure mobs are enabled.
- 2Find the Sky Pillar structure — a tall tower that generates naturally in the world.
- 3Right-click the Beacon at the top of the Sky Pillar while holding the Nether Star.
- 4Mewtwo spawns at level 70. It's one of the strongest — bring your best team.
- 1No summon needed — Mew spawns naturally but at an ultra-rare rate.
- 2Your best bet is the Faraway Ruin structure — a special location that increases Mew's spawn rate significantly.
- 3Visit at noon in-game time in a Forest, Jungle or Dark Forest biome.
- 4Be patient — Mew can still be extremely elusive even with ideal conditions.
Rayquaza
Rayquaza is arguably the most important legendary to catch — defeating or catching it unlocks access to Paradox Pokémon and the Shady Villager NPC, opening up late-game content.
- 1Defeat the Ender Dragon and collect the Dragon Egg it drops.
- 2While still in The End, find or build a Beacon on the main island.
- 3Right-click the Beacon while holding the Dragon Egg. The egg is NOT consumed — you keep it.
- 4Rayquaza spawns at level 100. Bring your absolute best team.
- 5After defeating/catching Rayquaza, you'll unlock Paradox Pokémon via the Shady Villager in Dark Oak forest biomes.
Other Legendaries
Several more legendaries are available via the Legendary Encounters datapack, each with their own unique requirements.
- 1Craft a Galarica Wreath using Galarica Twigs (found in ice biomes) and a Galarica Cuff.
- 2Find a Beacon in a Dark Forest biome and right-click it holding the wreath.
Jirachi spawns naturally in the Crimson Forest biome (Nether) at a rare rate. No summoning required — just patience and exploration.
Victini spawns at rare rates in the Warped Forest biome in the Nether via the Legendary Encounters datapack.
Meloetta spawns at rare rates in the Warped Forest biome (Nether) via the Legendary Encounters datapack.
Legendary Dungeons
The Legendary Encounters datapack also adds underground Legendary Dungeons — one-time-use structures buried throughout the world. Each dungeon lets you summon a random legendary you've previously encountered.
- 1Explore underground (below Y=40) to find these ancient temple structures.
- 2Place a Totem of Undying in the dropper at the dungeon entrance before entering.
- 3A random legendary you've previously faced will spawn inside. Prepare accordingly.
