Quick Answer

🕳️ Cave & Underground ⛰️ Mountains Any Time of Day 14 Steel Types Total

Steel is the rarest type pool in Cobblemon by average rarity. Almost everything is in a cave or on a mountain, there's no time restriction for most of them, and a good chunk require evolution items (Dusk Stone, Metal Coat, King's Rock). Aron is your fastest entry point — uncommon in caves any time. From there, Mawile and Beldum are the most-searched targets, both requiring patience and deep cave access.

⚙️
Steel types have the best defensive typing in the game Steel resists 10 types and is immune to Poison. Every steel type you add to your team brings immediate defensive value. The hunt is worth it — especially for Aegislash, Mawile and Metagross which are three of the strongest Pokémon in competitive Cobblemon.

Best Biomes for Steel Type Hunting

🕳️
Cave & Underground
Best overall — widest steel pool

Cave biomes are where the majority of steel types live. Aron, Honedge, Pawniard (night), Mawile, Beldum, Bronzor and Durant all spawn underground. Y-level matters significantly for steel types — Aron spawns at any depth, but Mawile and Beldum need Y below 40 and 30 respectively. Honedge and Aegislash are night-only. Plan your caving session around both depth and time.

⛰️
Mountains & Extreme Hills
Skarmory, Magnemite, Beldum

Skarmory is mountain-exclusive — the only steel/flying type and one of the better defensive walls in the game. Magnemite and Magneton also spawn in mountainous terrain and get a spawn boost during storms. Beldum spawns on mountains as well as in caves, so high-altitude areas with cave entrances are ideal for targeting it specifically.

💡
Mawile is easier than it sounds — just go deep enough Players miss Mawile because they don't go deep enough. It needs Y below 40 and spawns at any time, meaning a standard mid-depth mine won't produce one. Get below Y-40, keep walking cave corridors, and it will appear. It's rare, not ultra-rare — patience at the right depth is all it takes.
