Quick Answer
Dark types overlap heavily with ghost types in terms of location — caves and dark forests at night are where you'll find the most. The key difference is that a handful of dark types (Sneasel, Murkrow, Absol) also spawn in specific overworld biomes at any time. If you're after a specific dark type, the biome matters more than the time — some are cave-exclusive, some are surface-only, some are frozen biome exclusives.
How Dark Type Spawning Works
Dark types in Cobblemon don't have a single shared biome like fire types do with desert — they're spread across caves, dark forests, frozen biomes and open terrain. What unites them is the night preference. Most dark types have significantly higher spawn weights at night, and several are night-only entirely.
The exception group is worth knowing: Sneasel, Absol and a few others spawn in cold or mountain biomes at any time of day. These are useful targets if you want a dark type but don't want to wait for nightfall.

Best Biomes for Dark Type Hunting
Dark oak forests and old growth taigas at night give the widest surface-level dark type pool. Murkrow, Purrloin, Nickit, Zorua and Honchkrow all spawn here. If you want dark types without caving, a dark forest at night is your starting point. Zoroark is the crown jewel here — rare, but the dark forest is the only reliable place it appears.
Sableye (dark/ghost) and Pawniard (dark/steel) are the cave exclusives for dark types. Both spawn underground at night. If you're already caving for ghost types, you'll likely encounter these two — they share spawn space with Gastly and Honedge.
Sneasel and Weavile are the standout dark types here — they spawn any time of day which makes them the easiest dark types to hunt without waiting for night. Sneasel is uncommon and common enough to find quickly. Weavile is rarer but also any-time. If you just need a dark type fast, frozen biomes during the day are your most efficient route.
